This is Jim Joe

WHO THE HELL IS JIM JOE?

Jim Joe is a graffiti artist, currently hyperactive in New York City. He has made quite a name for himself with his simple, sometimes humorous writings, especially in the Lower East Side and East Village, where his tag is ubiquitous. He first caught the attention of Subway Art Blog in February for hitting up the Essex Street station on the J train. This is our Jim Joe artist profile, which is a culmination of six months of obsessively following his work in the subway and beyond.

MEET JIM JOE

Here is what we know about him:

He is a he. We can confirm this through folks who have seen him.  A few Animal NYC readers have seen him in action and commented about it in one of Animal’s articles.

One commenter said: “I SAW HIM! I was on 16th an 7th ave, he wrote, ‘My friends think I’m a fool, my friends think I’m a fool- Jim Joe’ in silver marker on a discarded couch. Then he took a picture of it and walked away.

Another said: “I saw Jim Joe on Bleeker and Jones a few weeks ago and knew it was him after he wrote on a US Postal Service Mailbox. It was one of the best moments of my life. I took a picture of him with my cell phone. It was kind of like a celebrity siting but better because only special New Yorkers know of him. AMAZING.

According to The Link Newspaper of Canada, Jim Joe is originally from Montreal and attended McGill University; he was featured in the Fall 2009 issue of McGill’s art magazine, Folio, in his fourth year.

He became active in New York sometime around early 2010 and has graced objects with his tag at least as far north as Columbus Circle, and as far out in Brooklyn as Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant. His canvas of choice, though, seems to be the southeast area of Manhattan.

Jim Joe is unlike most graffiti artists, not only due to his style and artistic influences, but also because he has a website, a blog, a Twitter account and a publicly known e-mail address.

Phillip Romano – Tile Series

Let’s get this out of the way now — you may have noticed that the artist I am speaking about in this post has the same last name as myself. This is because we are womb-mates.

My brother, Phillip Romano, is a young photographer finishing up an art degree at Harlem’s City College of New York. He is exhibiting work this week, called Tile Series, which I would be interested in talking about on Subway Art Blog even if we didn’t share genes.

In this work, subway tiles are the canvases and commuters are the artists. The drips, spills, scuffs and scrapes people make on the floors of subway stations become unintentional art. The photos seem to evoke Jackson Pollock’s action paintings, not only by appearance, but also their interest in the subconscious.

The way in which the images are displayed is worth noting as well. Phillip explains:

The tile series pieces each document single markings found on subway platforms. Each tile is photographed, printed, and mounted separately and then arranged in their original order on the wall.

You can find three pieces from this project at CCNY’s annual photography exhibition, open from May 3rd – May 14th, with an opening reception May 6th, 5-8pm. Details can be found on the event’s Facebook page. More of the tile series and other work by Phillip can be found on his portfolio site: Phillip Romano Photography.

The Former New York – Photos by Richard Sandler

Photographer Richard Sandler will be exhibiting work at the Millennium Film Workshop later this month. The show, called “The Former New York,” focuses on the New York City of the seedy `80s. Many of the images depict the subway in a when graffiti was rampant and before cell phones, iPods and other devices occupied our attention.

The gallery’s website indicates that these photos were chosen to “depict a time that lives in limbo: they are too young to be the historical records of the fuzzy past, and way too old to resemble contemporary culture, now moving at warp speed.”

Sandler’s photos show a different side of the graffiti filled trains than those taken by Cooper, Chalfant and Naar. Rather than focusing on the graffiti itself, work is more about the environment it created and how people interacted within it.

The show will be open from April 30th through June 19th, with an opening reception and film screening on May 6th 6-8pm. All the details can be found here.

The book is expected to include many of his works which were completed after he stopped posting on flickr.

The Artist’s Commute: Gina Martynova

"Starry Eyed Sea"

Gina Martynova is a New York-based illustrator. Her work has a whimsical, fantastical style which has been achieved through the use of watercolor paints. One of Gina’s projects is a blog called In Transit, where she posts her studies of New Yorkers in flux. We asked her a few questions about this work which can be found below.

Why do you draw people on the subway?

I draw people on the subway because I am intrigued by the lines and shapes the human body and clothing forms while in public transit. It started out as an assignment for a drawing class and later grew into an ongoing hobby. There is just something very captivating about this situational moment in time that creates interesting lines and layout — it’s almost as if that person is my muse for the 5 minutes that they can spare. I also like to convey their emotions — it’s interesting to capture feelings because I have noticed that people can be very transparent in evoking their feelings in public places.

How long does it usually take you to draw someone?

My process varies from person to person depending on how much time I have. It usually takes around 5-8 minutes to draw someone from head to toe. I tend to draw people that create an interesting composition and negative space. I start with the head and upper torso. If I have time and they haven’t moved or gotten up, I draw the rest of their body. I use a Faber-Castell artist pen, which is India ink in a sepia tone.

Have you ever run into a situation where the person realized you were drawing them? If so, what happened?

This happens a lot if the person is awake! When it does I get different responses. One man seemed very happy to be drawn and after I was done came to take a look. Another young man reading a religious book seemed very annoyed at my actions and got up to move as far away from me as possible! Women I draw are either complimented or become very insecure and sometimes stand up so as to prevent me from continuing. It’s very interesting. I have yet to encounter someone that is really offended or gets angry. Overall I think people in New York are curious.
