The Next Best Thing

The graffiti-covered subway train is fixed in our imagination as an icon of New York culture. Indeed, newcomers and visitors are often somewhat dismayed to discover the semi-pristine condition of present-day MTA subway cars.

To remedy this, Smart Crew, a graffiti outfit based in Queens, created a nostalgic tribute to the lost art of train tagging: a tractor-trailer painted like a subway car from the 7 line, replete with old school 70’s style tags and bubble letters.

For greater  verisimilitude, the “train” even has an American flag and train number, the latter corresponding to last year, when the train design was first painted.

The design of the graffiti is distinctly old school, and presumably a real treat for graff connoisseurs.

They Walk Among Us

These sinister stickers from 6th Avenue station seem to suggest that actors, accountants and even journalists are not human. It’s either a warning message sent back in time by John Connor . . . or some talented sticker-making satirists.

The proportionality of the cyborg eye vis-a-vis Jason Sudeikis’s face is a particularly nice touch.

The suggestion that newscasters are secretly cyborgs is unsettlingly credible.

The Great 14th Street Subway Art Switch

If an art installation changes in the subway, will anyone notice? A pair of artists put that question to the test last month, subtly changing artwork in the long tunnel between the 14th Street/6th Avenue and the 14th Street/7th Avenue stations last month, according to Demotix.com and Animal NY.

Usually gracing the corridor is Jennifer Kotter’s “MTA Jewels,” a series of photos of gold-painted transit workers’ instruments. But Outré, a NYC-based artist who seems to specialize in work that is easily missed, overlaid Kotter’s work with similar pictures of gold-plated children’s clothing and diningware taken by photographer stomachface. No one, including transit workers, seemed to notice for twelve whole days in January. Take a look at these before-and-after pictures. Would you have noticed the switch?

The Subway Art of Enrico Miguel Thomas

Enrico Miguel Thomas is the quintessential subway artist; he works in the subway, his work is about the subway and the subway also acts as a canvas for his work (so to speak).

“The Subway Artist of New York,” as he is known, makes detailed line drawings of various scenes related to the New York City transit system—both underground and aboveground. Many artists depict life in the subway, but Enrico takes this idea a step further and uses the subway map as his canvas.

The artist has had a rough childhood and escaped to art at an early age. Despite this hardship, he has made the most of what he has been dealt; this shows in his work as well. “I use very little — free maps and Sharpies — to show that even if you have very little, you can still do something good,” he told the NY Times in April 2010.

Whole-Car Graffiti Piece Spotted at East New York Yard

What you see above is an extremely rare sight. Whole-car pieces like this used to be fairly commonplace in the 80s when subway graffiti was reaching its prime. Nowadays, if substantial graffiti is found on a train it will not even be put into service; so if it even happens, it is seldom seen in the wild. This is why this piece is a special one. It is labeled 2011, and is quite possibly the first of its kind made in this year. Cheers to Tats Crew for giving NYC a blast from the past.

See Me Tell Me – Gifting Artwork to the People of New York City

One of the great things about street art and subway art is that it is free; free of charge, free of the gallery, free of the museum and its influence; even free from the law in many cases. Public spaces make art more accessible and so does the artist known as See Me Tell Me.

See Me (for short) makes editions of small art pieces and hangs them in the subway for the public to take. Each piece is numbered and includes the address to the artist’s website where straphangers can go to indicate that they found one of them and make comments about the work. See me also has a Twitter account where s/he posts when new work is placed underground.

This project first came to my attention when Jay Shells (another artist that has gifted his work in the subway) sent me this photo:

I had no way of tracking down the artist at the time, but months later I randomly stumbled upon See Me’s Twitter and made the connection. I had been keeping an eye on the Twitter account for a while waiting for my opportunity to check out these trinkets in person, and just last week I finally got my chance.

See Me gave me a rough location and time to look for the work. Not only did I get my hands on some art, I also got to meet the artist! The two pieces I acquired were from the “Subway Saints” series. I was tempted to keep both, but in the end I was able to suck it up and leave this one (above) at the Essex Street station on the J line.
