Snowed In

As a result of our first major snow storm of the year here in New York City, there have been reports of snow inside underground subway stations and passengers getting stuck on trains for hours. This sculpture by artist Brina Thurston seems way too appropriate as a representation of what straphangers are experiencing in the aftermath of Snowpocalypse 2010.

‘Master Station’ was on display in Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens from September 2009 – March 2010. Thurston says her inspiration for building the decoy station entrance was the fact that the area could really use a subway stop. The structure is actually made out of wood, but painted to look like metal. “It may not be a Hector Guimard Paris Metro but the NY subway entrance can be an equally glorious sight in our busy urban lifestyle.”

Let’s hope the MTA can get its act together soon, otherwise the service status might look like this for days.

Weekend Abstraction: Toxic Sludge

I found this delicious neon green puddle at Canal Street. Bon appetit!

Subway Gift Ideas – Underground Signs

Looking for a gift for the train buff in your life? Look no further. Underground Signs is a company that makes customized NYC subway signs. Not only can they recreate actual signs from the MTA’s 468 stations, they can also make completely personalized ones, like the Konami code above (video game nerds will get this one). The signs are officially licensed by the MTA. They also just obtained the rights to recreate signs from Boston’s MBTA. Traitors.  Check them out at underground-signs.com!

Make Your Own Kind of Mosaic

Ted Stanke is a local artist with an unusual medium. He uses pieces of U.S. currency for his sculptures and mosaics. In the piece above he reproduced the mosaic signage at the Wall Street station. Ted’s sign would be way more appropriate than the original. Too bad mutilating currency is controversial and the MTA would never allow it. But I digress.

The artist has made everything from playing cards, to Coke cans to a portrait of Obama out of money. His work is regularly on display at the Greenpoint Gallery and can find troves more of this wonderful work on his blog.

Erica Garber, Artist

Several readers have asked me about the anonymous artist who created and installed this branch at 14th and 6th Avenue. I am pleased to announce that she has put up another piece and that she is going public! Her name is Erica Garber and she is very excited to share her work with the world. She recently installed her second subway piece which you can see above. As with most subway art, this work is hyper-ephemeral. The piece above was taken down just minutes after being installed, but at least she got a video of it happening!

If you like Erica’s work, please rate her portfolio 5 stars on 3rd Ward’s website and help her get a residency.

Hit the “more” button to check out a beautiful statement from the artist on her inspiration for this project.

A New York Mona Lisa

This awesome Mona Lisa was made out of MetroCards by artist Juan Carlos Pinto. The Guatemala-born artist takes pride in the use of these non-biodegradable materials his medium. From his site:

The idea of using these non-biodegradable cards is to reinforce recycling and prolonging its use indefinitely while providing the artist with a source free material. It is also a way of reminding us about the danger this material can cause if left to seep into the earth.

The work is being display through the 31st at the DIS Micro Gallery; 147 Front Street in DUMBO Brooklyn. Details can be found here.
